Мeeting of the EAEU Pharmacopoeia committee
A meeting of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) Pharmacopoeia Committee was held in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. Key items on the agenda included the election of new leadership, a review of the work carried out over the past three years, and the approval of plans for the further development of uniform quality standards for medicinal products for the Union’s member states.
Specialists from the S.D. Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University are actively involved in the work of the EAEU Pharmacopoeia Committee: the Dean of the School of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Z.B. Sakipova, and staff of the scientific and educational Pharmacopoeia Centre, which is a structural unit of the Science and Technology Park.
Elections of the new leadership of the EAEU Pharmacopoeia Committee.
At the meeting, elections were held for the fourth term of the leadership of the EAEU Pharmacopoeia Committee. Professor Ardak Tulegenova, Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Honorary Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, was elected as its Chair for a three-year term. Valeria Bagirova (Russia), Sergei Marchenko (Belarus) and Igor Strekha (Belarus), all professors and Doctors of Pharmaceutical Sciences, were elected as deputy chairpersons.
Results for 2023–2026: harmonisation and global standards.
Addressing the participants, Ardak Tulegenova presented a detailed report on the work carried out between 2023 and 2026. During this period, the third part of the first volume of the Union Pharmacopoeia was successfully adopted. Experts have carried out a colossal amount of work in preparing 105 general pharmacopoeial articles (monographs), which will soon be officially included in the EAEU Pharmacopoeia.
The results of this work enable the deep harmonisation of the national pharmacopoeias of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, as well as the establishment of effective cooperation on pharmacopoeial standardisation with Kyrgyzstan and Armenia. An important step towards global recognition of the Union’s standards was the creation of a special expert group tasked with harmonising EAEU pharmacopoeial articles with the standards developed by the global Pharmacopoeial Discussion Group (PDG).
Plans for 2026 and the transition to the second volume.
Chinara Mambetalieva, Deputy Director of the Department of Technical Regulation and Accreditation of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), who attended the meeting, spoke about the current status of the documents. She reported that preparations are currently well underway for the final, fourth part of the first volume of the EAEU Pharmacopoeia, which includes harmonised general pharmacopoeial articles.
At the same time, the committee is already moving on to the next major phase — work has begun on the development of specific pharmacopoeial articles (monographs), which will form the second volume of the Union Pharmacopoeia. As part of this work, the committee members:
— approved the relevant Guidelines for the Development of Specific Pharmacopoeial Articles (Part IV. Medicinal Products);
— approved the official work schedule for 2026;
— reviewed the very first drafts of specific monographs for the future second volume.
International interest and observer countries
Particular attention was paid at the meeting to expanding international cooperation. Professor Ardak Tulegenova emphasised the exceptional importance of involving representatives from countries with observer status within the EAEU in the work on the unified Pharmacopoeia.
According to her, during the reporting period, experts from Uzbekistan and Cuba have already been actively participating in the committee’s work as observers. Representatives from Iran have expressed official interest in joining the work of the EAEU Pharmacopoeia Committee.
