International molecular biology Workshop at KazNMU
International molecular biology Workshop at KazNMU
The International Workshop in Molecular Biology was held from the 16th to 18th June 2015 by the German/Kazakh network for the diagnostics of highly dangerous pathogens at the Kazakh National Medical University in Almaty. The participants of this event were 21 participants from partner organizations of the German Kazakh network from Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan and Germany. This included participants from the KNMU, SPC SEEM and SES from Kazakhstan.
Beside scientists of the Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology and Kazakh PhD students working within the scope of the German/Kazakh network, an expert in sequencing was invited from the Institute of Diagnostic Virology of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut from Germany.
The workshop was scheduled in theoretical and practical education contents whose main focus was on the work with DNA.
Contents of the theoretical lessons were directly transformed in the practical training. This included an in depth lesson in DNA isolation from inactivated homogenized tick tissue. Theory included also real-time and conventional PCRs targeting Rickettsia, an intracellular agent with DNA genome that can induce diseases in humans. Practical education contents were nucleic acid extraction, real time PCR, conventional PCR and at the end of the workshop the genome of a Rickettsia membrane protein was sequenced.
The molecular genetic laboratory staff in Scientific research Institute of Fundamental and Applied Medaicine supported the workshop with great enthusiasm.
The methods learnt in the workshop support the expert’s assessment in our Kazakh partner institutes that allows the discovery and characterization of dangerous illness and which supports the construction of systems of recognition of unusual illness outbreaks.
