KazNMU Faculty Members Awarded the Title “Best University Teacher of 2025”
At a meeting of the national competition commission at the end of December, the winners of the title ‘Best University Teacher of 2025’ were announced. The competition selected the best teachers who have excelled in their field.
Among the best university teachers in the country are our colleagues from the S.D. Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University: Zhaparkulova Karlygash Altynbekovna, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Biotechnology and General Chemical Technology, and Mombekov Serzhan Esimbayevich, Associate Professor of the Department of Engineering Disciplines and Best Practices.
A total of 150 people from 37 higher education institutions across the country were awarded the title of ‘Best University Teacher’. A total of 502 candidates from 89 higher education institutions in the country took part in the competition. The competition assessed indicators such as the development and publication of electronic educational resources and teaching materials, scientific publications in domestic and international journals, patents and other achievements of teachers.
Particular attention was paid to the quality of teaching and the contribution of candidates to the training of personnel with higher and postgraduate education. The ‘Best University Teacher’ competition has been held annually for 20 years, since 2005.
Over the past three years, there has been an increase in the threshold score. This year, the threshold score was 85 points, which is 14 points higher than in 2024 (2022 – 45 points, 2023 – 57 points), which indicates the high level of competition and quality of the teaching staff.
This title gives teachers the opportunity to conduct research, improve their professional qualifications, and undertake internships at leading universities and research centres around the world. It is a high recognition of their professionalism and contribution to the development of the country’s higher education system.
KARLYGASH ALTYNBEKOVNA ZHAPARKULOVA
The past year has been significant for Karlygash Altynbekovna in a number of other ways, including her appointment by the country’s Higher Attestation Commission to the title of Associate Professor and a research internship from 27 October to 7 November 2025 at the Applied Biotechnology Laboratory of the School of Natural Sciences at the University of Westminster (University of Westminster QS Ranking) in the British capital, London.
K.A. Zaparukova graduated from the Faculty of Biology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University with a degree in Biotechnology. She then went on to study for a master’s degree, a doctorate, and internships in the United States and Europe. She holds a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Production Technology.
Research areas: pharmaceutical development of medicinal products, licensing of pharmaceutical production and standardisation of medicinal products.
Author and co-author of about 40 scientific papers, more than 10 author’s certificates and patents.
Head and participant of several scientific grant projects of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, intra-university projects. He heads a group of employees of the S.D. Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University participating in the work of a consortium to develop a vaccine against brucellosis, together with partners: the Research Institute for Biological Safety Problems, Antigen LLP, and the OTARBIOPHARM biopharmaceutical plant.
MOMBEKOV SERZHANA ESIMBAEVICH
Graduated in 2013 from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Informatisation with a degree in 5B011200-Chemistry from the Arkalyk State Pedagogical Institute named after Y. Altynsarin, in 2015 — a master’s degree from the Kazakh National Pedagogical University named after Abai, in 2018 — a doctorate from the Kazakh National Medical University named after S.D. Asfendiyarov. PhD in 6D074800 — Pharmaceutical Production Technology.
Areas of scientific interest: search for and introduction of new natural excipients into domestic pharmaceutical technology, pharmaceutical development of new drugs based on domestic natural raw materials.
Mombekov S.E. holds three patents of the Republic of Kazakhstan and is the author of more than 35 scientific and educational articles. In 2019, he became one of the winners of the Republican Inventors’ Competition ‘SHAPAAT — 2019’ for his patent ‘Gel with antifungal action based on pomiferin from the fruits of Maclura aurantiaca’.
Serzhan Esimbaevich is a determined researcher with an analytical mind who closely follows developments in the fields of biological and medical sciences, pharmacy, and biotechnology. He has completed a number of internships at research institutes and universities in Europe and the United States.
At the end of the summer of 2025, he returned to Kazakhstan after completing a one-year scientific internship, ‘500 Scientists,’ in the United Kingdom. The internship was organised by the Sustainable Biotechnology Group and the Genome Engineering Laboratory of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Westminster in London.
