NMOSD and Myasthenia Gravis: Current Understanding of the Problem, Clinical Pathways for Solutions
The Department of Nervous Diseases of S.D. Asfendiyarov KazNMU continues its series of educational events for practical healthcare, dedicated to the 95th anniversary of S.D. Asfendiyarov University and the 90th anniversary in memory of Professor S.K. Kaishibayev.
On September 11, 2025, in the city of Uralsk, an educational seminar was held as part of the implementation of the cascade method of training healthcare specialists, in accordance with the Roadmap for Improving Neurological Care for the Adult Population of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2025–2027 (No. 03324 dated 23.01.2025). The event was organized with the support of the Public Association «Association of Neurologists» of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Institute of Postgraduate Education of S.D. Asfendiyarov KazNMU, and the Health Department of the West Kazakhstan Region. The coordinator of the event was the Chief Freelance Neurologist of the Health Department of Uralsk, A.G. Dzhuldugulova.
At the Rehabilitation Center hall, a training seminar for physicians was held, dedicated to current issues in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of Myasthenia Gravis; clinical features of myasthenia in children; NMOSD; and anticomplement therapy for these conditions, including points of application and the evidence base. Issues concerning adult patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) were also addressed. Neurologists — both adult and pediatric — as well as general practitioners from various healthcare institutions in Uralsk participated in the event. The seminar became an important platform for professional dialogue and exchange of experience among specialists in neurology and related medical disciplines.
Experts presented reports based on modern scientific data and the results of current clinical studies. Among the invited lecturers were Professors G.A. Mukhambetova and R.B. Nurzhanova of the Department of Nervous Diseases at S.D. Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University, along with the Head of the Department, S.T. Turuspekova.
Particular attention within the seminar was devoted to the development of practical skills for assessing motor functions in adult patients with Myasthenia Gravis and SMA. A joint clinical assessment was conducted of a patient with Myasthenia Gravis and with Type III Spinal Muscular Atrophy, with analysis of clinical and paraclinical data, contributing to a deeper understanding of the presented material.
