Professor of KazNMU spoke at the International Congress EuroPCR 2023
Each year, the interventional cardiovascular disease community gathers in Paris to learn, share knowledge and shape the future of patient care worldwide.
EuroPCR, the annual world-leading course on interventional cardiology, has been held for more than 30 years. It is designed for everyone involved in sharing knowledge and skills and improving patient care worldwide: interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, imaging specialists, radiologists, nurses, allied health professionals and other practitioners, as well as researchers, innovators and industry representatives. The four-day meeting addresses coronary and peripheral vascular, cardiac, including valve, interventions for hypertension, heart failure and stroke, while keeping the community abreast of all the latest innovations in the field.
To take full advantage of EuroPCR’s renowned training course participants are encouraged to join the course on-site. There is also online access, which allows a choice of live streaming sessions and the opportunity to interact in real time with their colleagues in Paris and around the world.
Practical learning will again be the focus of the Course. Participants at all levels will be able to hone their practical skills in 220 workshops that will take place in the 902-square-meter Learning Village, in an innovative simulation-based training room and in a hands-on lab for small groups of participants.
50% of the course is made up of 2,400 global submissions to this year’s competitions for scientific abstracts, clinical cases, imaging, innovations and cutting-edge trials. 879 speakers from 78 different countries will share their work.
This year’s course will mark the 30th anniversary of primary PCI for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Since its invention, this life-saving PCI procedure has saved literally millions of people around the world. This will be the focus of the welcome ceremony, during which the Andreas Grunzig Ethics Award will also be announced.
Other sessions of interest
LIVE cases cover topics such as: distal left coronary artery trunk, aortic stenosis, calcified lesions, bifurcation lesions, TAVI, transcatheter mirtal valve replacement, robotics and multivessel lesions.
Simulation-based learning: hands-on sessions on a wide range of topics include step-by-step demonstrations using simulation as well as opportunities for hands-on practice. They will cover many topics, such as focus on imaging — assessment of calcified plaques and control of PCI with IVUS and OCT, PCI of the left coronary artery trunk with IVUS and OCT, arterial puncture with echo control.
A program for nurses and allied professionals consisting of 9 sessions sharing expert advice and guidance, practical knowledge and up-to-date methods of daily practice.
The special EAPCI-PCR Fellows course the day before EuroPCR is designed for practitioners starting their professional career. It is supported by EAPCI Young and PCR NextGen and has already announced a full house with a record number of participants.
PCR Innovators Day will be held on May 15 and will bring together key stakeholders: practitioners, scientists, engineers and business professionals. It will culminate with a generous $200,000 Jon DeHaan Foundation award for the best innovation.
PCR’s Got Talent science essay competition for individuals under 40 consists of three in-person rounds. It has grown in popularity since it was first held in 2015. Participants benefit from on-site professional coaching to improve their communication and presentation skills, and the winner is announced at an awards ceremony. They receive feedback on their work on-site and online, and are invited to participate as tutors in the next edition of the course.
Participation of KazNMU employees in the international congress EuroPCR 2023
The most important events, such as the opening and closing of the congress, awarding of laureates, introduction of new Course Directors and broadcasts from operating rooms of leading clinics of the world, are held in the main arena with a capacity of 3700 people so that everyone could attend. On May 16, 2023, Sakhov Orazbek Sakhov, Associate Professor of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the S. Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University, Chairman of the Society of Interventional Cardiologists of Kazakhstan, Head of the Department of X-ray Surgery of the City Cardiology Center of Almaty, participated as an expert in the main arena on May 16, 2023 at the live case broadcast from the Leipzig Heart Center, Germany (session time from 15:00 to 16:30). Leipzig Heart Center was founded in 1994 and has a team of more than 40 cardiologists and 30 cardiac surgeons. They perform 6,000 coronarographies, 3,000 percutaneous coronary interventions, and more than 1,000 endovascular implantations of prosthetic aortic valves (TAVI) per year. In terms of the number of cardiac surgical operations it ranks among the leading in the world.
The topic of the broadcast was: «Intravascular imaging techniques in calcified stenoses». A clinical case was presented, a young patient with a single-vessel coronary lesion, but stenosis with significant calcification. Techniques such as OCT, rotational atherectomy, intravascular lithotripsy (to destroy the calcified plaque) were used. During the discussion of the operation Orazbek Sakhov presented the results of the City Cardiology Center, as well as the general situation on the use of intravascular imaging methods in Kazakhstan.
On May 17 from 10:30 to 12:00 Sahov Orazbek together with Professor Farrel Hellig from Netcare Sunninghill Hospital held a session «Innovations in Coronary Intervention». 6 doctors from Spain, India, UAE, Pakistan, Russia presented interesting clinical cases. The audience actively participated in the discussion of innovations in interventional cardiology.
This year 60 societies of interventional cardiologists from different countries prepared 22 joint scientific sessions. On May 17 from 14:45 to 16:15, the Society of Interventional Cardiologists of Kazakhstan together with the societies of interventional cardiologists of Algeria and Tunisia held a joint session: «Left coronary artery trunk and bifurcations: brainstorming and solutions to complex cases». Each country presented its own complex clinical case, which was discussed together with an expert from another country and participants of the session. The speakers from Kazakhstan were: Sakhov Orazbek Srailovich as the session chairman, Kolesnikov Alexey Evgenievich — as a speaker, Dairbekova Saule Muslimbaevna — as a discussant. The session was held at a high scientific level, the participants noted the complexity of the presented cases and original solutions, which in the future will help to quickly solve such clinical situations.
On May 18 from 17:00 to 18:30 Sahov Orazbek together with Professors Ruben Piraino from Argentina and George Shenoda from Egypt held a session «ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and coronary artery calcinosis — a bad combination». Drs. Ruth Campbell from Ireland, Michael Mcgarvey from the UK, Anita Paggi from Italy, Arvind Sharma from India, Helena Tizon-Marcos from Spain, Monica Verdoia from Italy, and Zhihong Yao from the UK listened to the presentations. ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction is one of the most dangerous diseases with a high mortality rate, and the combination of coronary artery calcinosis leads to complications during surgery and a worse prognosis. Doctors shared the experience of their clinics in dealing with such complex clinical situations. The task of the session presenters was to actively discuss the presented cases, to engage the audience in the discussion, while respecting the regulations, to note the teaching points of each case and to summarize the results.
The congress was a success, thousands of hours of training course were carefully organized. All participants of the congress will further share the knowledge gained with their colleagues, which will improve the quality of cardiology care provided. Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery Department Sakhov Orazbek also plans to share the knowledge and experience gained with the residents of the department.
