Student halls of residence as a special communicative environment for modern students
There are 35 universities in Almaty, with more than 200,000 students, 124,000 of whom are non-residents (62%). The S.D. Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University has one of the largest numbers of dormitories for non-resident students among Kazakhstani universities.
The university administration pays great attention to providing non-resident students with comfortable living conditions in dormitories. The student campus of the S.D. Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University includes eight dormitories. On August 26, 2024, dormitory No. 9 was opened. Dormitory No. 10 is under construction.
«Every year, the need for new dormitories becomes more and more urgent. The university is successfully coping with the task of providing housing for non-resident students. A new dormitory is not just a building. Every student will feel at home here, surrounded by comfort and safety. In addition, starting last year, a phased reconstruction of the old dormitories on the main campus began so that all students could enjoy a high level of comfort,» said the rector of KazNMU named after S.D. Asfendiyarov at the grand opening of dormitory No. 9.
The recently commissioned dormitory No. 9 has a capacity of 420 beds. According to the concept developed by the University, the living conditions meet all international standards: comfortable rooms with bathrooms and showers inside the rooms, separate study and sleeping areas for each student, desks and lockers in the study area, convenient shared kitchens on each floor with all the necessary appliances, and comfortable classrooms. The dormitory has its own laundry room, library, luggage storage, entertainment and sports rooms.
This year, the major renovation of dormitories No. 1–5 was completed. For the first time in the history of KazNMU, the number of modern shower rooms, washbasin areas, kitchens, and utility rooms in the dormitories has been significantly increased, creating conditions for comfortable living for students.
The renovated dormitories meet international standards for campus infrastructure, including recreation areas and accessibility for all categories of students. The cost of living is significantly lower than on the apartment or hostel rental market.
Every year, about 2,000 students enroll at KazNMU named after S.D. Asfendiyarov. According to the distribution rules, first-year students and students from socially vulnerable families are given priority in dormitory placements.
The dean’s office of the School of Pharmacy, like other schools and faculties, pays great attention to the living conditions of non-resident students. In the new academic year, the dean of the School of Pharmacy, Professor Sakipova Z.B., visited the dormitories where the students of the School of Pharmacy live, familiarized herself with the living conditions, and talked with the students.
“Today we can say with confidence that KazNMU dormitories meet modern standards of quality and comfort. It is important for us that every student feels at home and that the living conditions correspond to international practices in the university environment,” emphasized Professor Sakipova Z.B.
