International Student Olympiad in Microbiology: intelligence, creativity, and diagnostics of the future
On April 17, 2026, the Annual International Subject Olympiad in the section “Microbiology, Virology, Parasitology” for 1st–3rd year students was held at the Kazakh National Medical University named after S.D. Asfendiyarov.
The event was organized in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs No. 3 and No. 4) and aimed at advancing students’ knowledge, professional skills, and academic training in medicine, as well as promoting public health and well-being by fostering the development of qualified specialists.
The Olympiad brought together talented and ambitious future doctors ready to demonstrate not only a high level of knowledge but also creative thinking.
The competition was conducted offline in three languages: Kazakh, Russian, and English. Teams completed four diverse stages.

Competition rounds:
1st round: Meme Contest “Team Introduction”
Participants impressed the jury with original video presentations featuring animated infographics. Scientific humor and creative delivery made this stage vivid and memorable.
2nd round: “Lab Technician vs Microbe”
A true intellectual challenge where teams analyzed video materials and images of various microorganisms and diagnostic methods. Participants demonstrated their understanding of diagnostic techniques and their ability to interpret results.
3rd round: “What? Where? When?”
A key highlight of this round was expert questions from the university leadership. The Rector and Vice-Rectors posed questions related to their fields and their connection to microbiology.
4th round: “Diagnostician in 60 Minutes”
Teams solved a clinical case with a practical diagnostic component, showcasing their applied skills.
Each round was evaluated by an expert jury using checklist-based scoring on tablets in real time.
